Sleeve Expansion Joint Overview

A sleeve expansion joint is a packed sliding pipeline compensator designed to absorb axial movement caused by thermal expansion and contraction. It is commonly used in district-heating, steam, hot-water, circulation-water and industrial transmission pipelines.

During operation, the inner sleeve slides relative to the outer sleeve along the pipeline axis. This sliding movement accommodates pipeline expansion and contraction within the designed travel range. A packing and compression assembly maintains the seal around the moving sleeve.

Key Features

  • Accommodates axial thermal movement through sleeve sliding
  • Suitable for straight pipelines requiring relatively large axial travel
  • Compact construction with customizable face-to-face length
  • Packing material can be selected for the medium and operating conditions
  • Available with welded, flanged or project-specific connections
  • Packing can be inspected, adjusted or replaced when required
  • Custom manufacturing based on piping conditions and project drawings

Construction

A sleeve expansion joint generally consists of an inner sleeve, outer sleeve, packing seal, packing compression assembly, connection ends, guiding components and any required limiting or protective structure.

The inner sleeve is the primary sliding component. The outer sleeve contains the sliding and sealing arrangement. Packing installed between the sleeves limits process-medium leakage, while the compression assembly controls packing pressure. Guiding components help maintain alignment during axial movement.

Materials and Packing Selection

The body, sleeves and connection components can be manufactured from carbon steel, stainless steel or other specified materials according to design pressure, operating temperature, process medium, corrosion conditions and project requirements.

Packing material should be selected according to medium compatibility, temperature, pressure, sliding frequency, sleeve surface condition and maintenance requirements.

High-temperature steam, corrosive media, pressure fluctuations and frequent movement may require a project-specific sealing and structural arrangement.

Movement Capability

Sleeve expansion joints are primarily designed to accommodate axial compression and extension along the pipeline centerline. They should not be used to absorb significant lateral movement, angular movement or torsion unless specifically engineered for those conditions.

Required movement should be calculated from pipeline length, installation temperature, maximum and minimum operating temperatures, pipe material and system layout.

Where extension caused by pipe contraction is the principal movement, the required preset position and available extension travel should be confirmed before manufacturing or installation.

Pressure Thrust and Piping Supports

A conventional sleeve expansion joint does not eliminate the axial thrust generated by internal pressure. Main anchors should therefore be designed to resist pressure thrust, packing friction and other piping-system forces.

Suitable pipe guides are required to maintain axial alignment and prevent excessive lateral loads, bending moments and torsion. The weight of the pipe and process medium should be carried by independent load-bearing supports.

Typical Applications

  • District-heating and regional thermal networks
  • Steam, hot-water and circulation-water pipelines
  • Power, chemical, metallurgical and energy projects
  • Long straight industrial transmission pipelines
  • Piping systems requiring relatively large axial movement
  • Industrial installations with limited available space

Installation Guidelines

  • Verify product orientation, installed length and available travel
  • Confirm pressure, temperature, medium and packing compatibility
  • Keep connected piping properly aligned with the sleeve axis
  • Do not force the joint into position to correct piping errors
  • Do not use the joint to support pipe, valve or equipment weight
  • Install anchors, guides and supports according to the piping design
  • Check packing compression and available sleeve travel after installation

Operation and Maintenance

The packing area, sleeve surface, connections, anchors and pipe guides should be inspected according to the process medium, temperature, pressure, movement frequency and project maintenance schedule.

If abnormal leakage is detected, the packing compression may be adjusted, suitable lubricant may be applied or the packing may be replaced after the system has been placed in a safe condition. Excessive packing compression should be avoided because it can increase friction and restrict normal sleeve movement.

Information Required for Selection

Please provide the following information so that the product construction, packing arrangement and travel can be properly evaluated:

  • Nominal diameter or pipe outside diameter and wall thickness
  • Design pressure and operating pressure
  • Design, operating and installation temperatures
  • Process medium and corrosion requirements
  • Required axial compression and axial extension
  • Face-to-face length and available installation space
  • Flange standard, weld-end dimensions or other connection requirements
  • Body, sleeve and packing material requirements
  • Pipeline anchor, guide and support arrangement
  • Inspection, packaging, quantity and destination-port requirements

We can design and manufacture sleeve expansion joints according to operating conditions, connection dimensions, piping layouts and project drawings. Final construction, materials, pressure rating, face-to-face length, movement capacity, packing arrangement and inspection requirements are subject to the approved technical specification and manufacturing drawing.

常见问题

常见问题

How does Sleeve Expansion Joint compensate pipeline movement?
Sleeve, rotary and spherical compensators absorb thermal movement through sliding, rotation or multi-directional turning structures, suitable for thermal, steam and long-distance pipelines.
How is the sealing structure confirmed?
Seal material and structure should be confirmed by medium, temperature, pressure, movement frequency and maintenance conditions.
Does maintenance-free mean no inspection?
Maintenance-free means reduced daily lubrication or frequent maintenance under design conditions, but connection, sealing and supports should still be inspected according to the project plan.
What site conditions should be confirmed before installation?
Confirm pipeline route, compensation amount, anchors, guides, installation space, medium, temperature, pressure and welded/flanged connection requirements.
What information is needed for a quotation?
Please provide DN/NPS, pressure class, working temperature, medium, connection type, movement, quantity and application position for Sleeve Expansion Joint. Drawings or site photos help speed up confirmation.
Can this product be customized by project drawing?
Yes. Sleeve Expansion Joint can be confirmed according to drawings, operating conditions, flange standard, material, installation space and packing requirements. Final specifications follow the confirmed drawing and order.
What inspections are made before shipment?
Typical checks include appearance, key dimensions, connection areas, sealing surfaces, welding or assembly quality and packing condition. Pressure, airtightness or material checks can be added when required by the order.
How are packing and export documents confirmed?
Packing can be confirmed according to product size, weight, shipping method and destination requirements. Packing list, invoice and project documents follow the confirmed order.
