Steel-in-Steel Prefabricated Insulated Externally Pressurized Expansion Joint Overview

A steel-in-steel prefabricated insulated externally pressurized expansion joint combines a metal bellows expansion assembly, service pipe, thermal-insulation layer and steel outer casing in one pipeline component. It is designed for district-heating, steam, hot-water and other insulated industrial piping systems requiring axial thermal movement compensation.

The expansion joint uses an externally pressurized bellows arrangement. As the pipeline expands or contracts with temperature changes, the bellows deforms axially and accommodates the required movement within its designed travel range.

Compared with a conventional internally pressurized arrangement, the externally pressurized design helps reduce the risk of column instability when relatively large axial compression movement is required. The steel outer casing protects the bellows, insulation and internal components during transportation, installation and service.

Key Features

  • Integrates axial compensation, thermal insulation and steel-jacket protection
  • Externally pressurized bellows design supports larger axial movement
  • Helps improve bellows stability during axial compression
  • Steel outer casing protects the bellows and insulation system
  • Suitable for prefabricated insulated and long-distance heating pipelines
  • Available with welded or project-specific connection ends
  • Custom manufacturing based on pressure, temperature and piping drawings

Construction

The assembly generally consists of a service pipe, metal bellows, internal sleeve or flow liner, steel outer casing, thermal-insulation layer, connection ends, guiding or limiting components and any required moisture drainage or waterproofing structure.

The service pipe carries the process medium, the metal bellows accommodates axial movement, the insulation layer reduces heat loss and the outer steel casing provides mechanical and environmental protection.

Externally Pressurized Operating Principle

The product is arranged so that process pressure primarily acts on the outside surface of the bellows. When thermal expansion or contraction occurs, the bellows compresses or extends axially to absorb pipeline movement.

The externally pressurized arrangement helps improve the stability of longer bellows assemblies during axial movement. However, the expansion joint still produces bellows spring force and pressure thrust. Proper main anchors, pipe guides and load-bearing supports remain necessary.

Materials and Insulation

Bellows can be manufactured from stainless steel grades such as 304, 316L, 321 or other project-specified alloys according to the medium, temperature, pressure and corrosion conditions.

The service pipe and steel outer casing are commonly manufactured from carbon steel, with alternative materials and protective coatings available for project requirements. Insulation material, thickness and density should be selected according to operating temperature, allowable heat loss, installation environment and the applicable insulation specification.

Movement Capability

This product is primarily designed to accommodate movement along the pipeline axis. It should not be used to absorb significant lateral movement, angular movement or torsion unless specifically engineered for those conditions.

Actual movement capacity depends on bellows geometry, number of convolutions, number of plies, material, design cycle life and operating conditions. Required movement should be calculated from pipe length, installation temperature, maximum and minimum operating temperatures and the thermal expansion coefficient.

Typical Applications

  • District-heating and regional thermal networks
  • Steel-jacketed prefabricated buried steam pipelines
  • High-temperature hot-water and industrial steam systems
  • Power, chemical, metallurgical and energy projects
  • Long straight insulated pipeline sections
  • Prefabricated insulated piping requiring larger axial movement

Installation and System Design

Before installation, verify product orientation, face-to-face length, preset movement, service-pipe and casing alignment, and the locations of anchors and guides.

Connected piping should remain properly aligned. The expansion joint should not be forcibly stretched, compressed or offset to correct pipeline installation errors.

Site welding procedures should protect the bellows, insulation and corrosion protection. After installation, service-pipe welds, outer-casing connections, insulation closure, waterproofing and support arrangements should be inspected.

Information Required for Selection

Please provide the following information so that the expansion joint, movement capacity and insulation arrangement can be properly evaluated:

  • Nominal diameter, service-pipe outside diameter and wall thickness
  • Outer steel-casing diameter and wall thickness
  • Design pressure and operating pressure
  • Design, operating and installation temperatures
  • Process medium and corrosion requirements
  • Required axial movement and design cycle life
  • Face-to-face length and available installation space
  • Insulation material, thickness and heat-loss requirements
  • Buried, above-ground or trench installation method
  • Pipeline anchor and guide arrangement
  • Connection, material, inspection, packaging and quantity requirements

We can design and manufacture steel-in-steel prefabricated insulated externally pressurized expansion joints according to operating conditions, pipe dimensions, installation method and project drawings. Final construction, materials, pressure rating, movement capacity and inspection requirements are subject to the approved technical specification and manufacturing drawing.
